Me<?php echo ‘Hellow World!’; ?>

I am Gautam, a 17 year old, XIth grader, g33k, obsessed with coding and photography. Anything related to technology interests me, whether it be artificial intelligence or open source projects like WordPress or creating a small bot. You can contact me here. I’ve tried to document year-wise bits of my life below. ;)

’11 | Class: X | Sweet Sixteen

  • Google Code-in ’11 winner
  • WordCamp Jabalpur Speaker
  • DatumDroid Developer
  • Discover I Co-founder
  • Technothlon – National rank 234
  • bbPress 2.0 Plugins: bbP Views, bbP Topic Views

In this year, I also started to take part in presentation competitions and realised that making a presentation really takes up a lot of time. I took part in two, one on Sustainable Environment and another on Substance Abuse. Though I didn’t win any prizes, but it was a good experience as I developed speaking skills and eventually spoke at WordCamp Jabalpur. :)

2010

  • Google Code-in ’10 winner
  • bbPress Plugins: Excluding the ones from ’09
  • House prefect & class topper in International Informatics Olympiad & IT for the session 2009-2010
  • Excellence Award in IT

2009

2008

I was yet again re-introduced to WordPress (really, I’ve never been introduced to Joomla or Drupal). This time it was OrkutPlus.net for which I made Orkut bots and toolkits (no more live, you might still get a copy of the bots though, uploaded on Rapidshare but they won’t be functional). The bots were written in Visual Basic and then the Orkut world shifted to PHP because it was faster – the server could make faster connections with Orkut than the user’s computer. I have almost forgotten Visual Basic, but I still code in PHP and that’s the main language I know. OrkutPlus needed forums, so we settled with bbPress. I tried porting a social bookmarking plugin named SexyBookmarks to bbPress and released it as Social It in 2009, and that’s how I got on with it. I also got an excellence in Information Technology from the school.

2007

This was the year when we shifted to Gurgaon and I changed my school to Amity International School, Sector 46. From my previous school, I also got a scholar for the session 2006-2007. I started a hacking community named Hacking D Worldd… (case, spell and dot-sensitive) on Orkut. I remember doing every possible thing on the internet for that community. And that’s one of the reasons that I’m security-aware while writing my programs. I was re-introduced to WordPress when I was blogging for a friend. I saw the administration interface and remembered that I’ve seen something like that. I saw that it is powered by WordPress, something which I had used before. I didn’t know that you could actually have a site that is powered by WordPress and hosted on your own servers. The blog’s life ended soon. I started taking part in cyber/tech-related olympiads that were held in my school, and won a bronze medal in International Informatics Olympiad.

2006

This was the year of when I have a certificate of me winning something in computers. It was an inter school logo programming competition held in Guru Nanak Public School, and my team (Shobhan and me) came first in it.

2005

I think it was this year when I actually had my first blog – livetech.wordpress.com, and my introduction to WordPress. I didn’t know the laws and I generally used to copy paste the content from other blogs. Then I got bored with it and deleted the blog. Till this year I had been getting various prizes in group singing, calligraphy, art, etc (things at which I’m not good now). I also used to read various Roald Dahl books and my school, Bal Bharati, Pitam Pura had a good reading challenge. You would get more marks in your English test if you read fictions and answered the questions asked by the teachers on that book.

’02 | Class: I

I got to know about email and asked my dad to set up an email account for me. My first email id was on Hotmail and my father used to narrate me the story of how the guy who wrote Hotmail got rich by Microsoft acquiring his service for around 40$ per user (as he used to narrate it). He quickly setup an email in the night, then we slept. When he was off to office the next morning, I opened up the computer, figured out what were sign in, sign up (I don’t know why they didn’t call it register), compose mail (I didn’t know the meaning of the word compose, found out when I actually clicked it and saw some textboxes including cc: bcc: etc.). I soon switched over to Yahoo! mail and used to hang out in Y! Messenger chat rooms. At that time we used to have a dialup connection.

2000

2000 was probably the year that I had my real first encounter with computers when it came into our home. Since then I’ve developed an interest in technology and computers. The following years, I usually used to play RoadRash, Duke Nukem, Claw, Mario, Midtown Madness and some others I can’t remember.

1999

My parents tell me that I got a prize in drag and drop on a computer. I really don’t remember doing that though. I even don’t remember more than 10 days of the two years I went to Mothers Pride, a playschool for kids.

1995

20 October: Gautam Gupta is born in New Delhi, India.
